COVID-19 Challenges Update 11
June 29, 2020. New York. – COVID-19 continues to present a global challenge for citizens, governments, healthcare professionals, scientists, corporations, and the media.
While the disease creates new challenges, it also highlights long-standing ones in terms of policy, communication, and societal awareness of key issues and how the media reports on these issues.
While COVID-19 triggered challenges that still require full attention in Brazil, Chile, an the US, other regions - like Asia and Europe - can start reflecting on who did what and why. Looking at the stock price development since 1995, it seems fair to question much of the language used in the media which has a powerful impact on investor and other sentiment. Too many presented judgements like “the worst crisis since WWII” too quickly. We all know that it becomes difficult to act moderately in times when superlatives seem to be the new normal.
Meanwhile, a record high number of prescriptions for Midazolam Hydrochloride coming from England’s NHS underscores the pressures on end-of-life care during the pandemic, although death statistics from EuroMOMO remain relatively low.
Health policy issues have also come into clear relief as the costs for testing passed onto individuals in the US have highlighted difficulties in the for-profit healthcare system’s response to tracking and containing COVID-19. At the same time, collecting information on how the immune system works and can be strengthened is critical to schools being able to reopen.
Large scale societal changes from the COVID-19 crisis are likely and there is a desperate need to improve health literacy. Luckily, an overall frame for dealing with these challenges and treating all lives as dignified and valuable already exists and has been accepted by 193 heads of state in the form of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals with their 169 clear targets.

These findings are produced in partnership with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the African Union, the Universities Network, UN Academic Impact, and diverse faith communities as we need better data and reporting on solutions for tackling the pandemic.
