BBC 2 Newsnight wins Media Tenor's Global TV Award
EMBARGOED UNTIL 6PM OCTOBER 22, 2013
Berlin. October 23, 2013. The British broadcaster, BBC 2 has emerged as the winner of the Global TV News Award for its Newsnight program. The honor was announced at Media Tenor's 14th International Agenda Setting Conference during an awards ceremony at the German parliament.
The Media Tenor Global TV Award recognizes news programs that both expose their audiences to a variety of issues and newsmakers, but which also report on issues that normally fall below the regular media awareness threshold. For the period July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013, 144,821 reports in 23 international TV News programs were analyzed according to twelve criteria.
The thirteen examined categories were: Diversity of domestic issues; diversity of newsmakers; share of coverage on foreign events; focus on women as opposed to men; salience of coverage on domestic vs. foreign coverage; diversity of sources; diversity of corporate industry coverage; share of coverage on companies; share of coverage on domestic economy; diversity of domestic political policy issues; share of coverage on domestic health policy; share of coverage on domestic education policy; diversity of positive and neutral coverage on developing countries.
BBC 2 Newsnight’s strong focus on transparency and diversity of sources set it apart from many other channels. It was also amongst the leaders in reporting on issues which tend to receive little attention in mainstream news broadcasts, namely education, health, and non-conflict stories related to developing nations.
U.S. program Fox News’ Special Report was the first runner-up because of the large diversity in its coverage of newsmakers and domestic policy.
For the last 20 years Media Tenor's mission has been to contribute to objective, diverse and newsworthy news by bringing together the diverse parties who both impact and are affected by the news. Media Tenor's global research projects include analyses of election campaigns, investor relations, public diplomacy, corporate communications and other topics critical to news makers and news audiences. The annual Agenda Setting Conference brings together these diverse constituencies for data-driven workshops, panels, case studies and keynote speeches.
