Canada wins Media Tenor's G20 Award
EMBARGOED UNTIL 6PM, OCTOBER 23
Berlin. October 23, 2013 – Canada has emerged as the winner of the Media Tenor G20 Award announced at a ceremony at the German parliament during Media Tenor's 14th International Agenda Setting Conference.
The Media Tenor G20 Award recognizes the G20 country that managed to keep media audiences informed on a range of topics, not only during key events, such as the G20 summits, but on an ongoing basis. The award was based on all 48,279 reports on thirteen opinion-leading international TV programs and in 11 business print publications which were analyzed based on ten different criteria.
These ten criteria were overall visibility without excessive negativity; salience of coverage on international politics; salience of coverage on domestic politics; tone of coverage in business media; salience of coverage on economic and business issues; analyst tonality; salience of coverage on social development; salience of coverage on education, science/technology, and environment/energy; salience of coverage on culture/sports; and tonality of coverage on government/leaders.
Canada claimed this year's award because it not only maintained a diverse media profile, but because it also consistently broke through the awareness threshold and onto the world stage on a broad number of topics, including education and science and technology. As such, this award celebrates the achievement of diversity, and not pure volume, which may arise from high levels of coverage on conflict and other crises.
Additionally, three of the BRIC countries – Russia, India, and Brazil – were the focus of high volumes of positive sentiment from financial analysts. These budding economic powerhouses form a key part of a new era for the global economy. Interest in these regions will most likely continue to grow in the coming years.
