Media Tenor Presents Integration Index at United Nations as part of International Migrants Day

Media analysis on the image of migrants and minorities

December 18, 2013. New York -- Around the world, primetime TV news continues to frame migrants and minorities as subjects of negativity and conflict, perpetuating stereotypes and hindering understanding, according to new research from Media Tenor International. In the U.K., for example, Media Tenor found that over half of all reports on minorities were negative, while almost no coverage was positive. Additionally, across TV news in the U.S., Canada, Switzerland, and the U.K. coverage of Muslims was negative at least 60% of the time, underscoring an “us vs. them” framing from the media.

Media Tenor’s findings will be presented at a panel discussion, Wednesday, December 18 at 1:15pm, on migration and development held by United Nations Academic Impact in association with the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute of Queens College, CUNY. This Classroom Conversation will connect the United Nations with classrooms around the world as the discussion focuses on the nature of international migration and the co-relation between migration and development.

Media Tenor International’s presentation of its 2013 Integration Index findings will include a look at how the portrayal of conflict, faith, and minority status interact on television news to influence the beliefs of people around the world.
