G20 Image Award Goes to Germany
International TV news highlights Germany’s clout
Vienna, February 20, 2015. Germany wins the G20 Country Image Award from the Media Tenor Institute for the best media image of the leading industrial and emerging countries. The results of the international study will be presented at the 15th Agenda-Setting Conference, to be held from February 19 to 21 in Vienna. Japan and the UK are the runners-up to this award.
The G20 Country Image Award does not reflect the verdict of a jury or expert survey but is the result of an analysis of international television news and business publications. For this purpose, Media Tenor has analyzed the international media coverage of the political, economic and social situation of the G20 countries.
“In a time of economic and political crises, the overall picture of the major industrialized countries and emerging economies is largely negative. Against this background, TV news from abroad emphasize Germany's economic strength and the country’s role on the stage of world politics,” says Roland Schatz, founder and CEO of Media Tenor International.
The increased importance of Germany is reflected in the high visibility of the country in international TV news: Only Russia, the U.S., the U.K., and France ranged before Germany in terms of volume, but all these countries were covered much more negatively.
Japan, winning the second prize, has recovered from the Fukushima shock, as the media interest has decreased significantly. Japan scored particularly well in the fields of society and culture. The United Kingdom, ranking third, compensated for some weaknesses in the perception of its political leadership by good news related to culture and sport as well.
For this award, Media Tenor evaluated a total of 457,783 reports from 23 international TV programs in a scientific content analysis employing trained human coders. The period of analysis ranged from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. The inter-coder reliability was 88% in the 2nd quarter of 2014.
