Germany Wins European Media Award

Economic and political strength drive positive TV reports

Vienna, February 20, 2015. Germany has the best media image of the 28 countries of the EU. Thus, the Federal Republic wins the EU Country Image Award from Media Tenor, a research institute. The results of the image ranking will be presented at the 15th Agenda Setting Conference, to be held from February 19 to 21 in Vienna. Ireland and the Netherlands placed as the first and second runners-up.

For this award, Media Tenor analyzed the reporting of 23 international TV news and three global business publications in order to compare the image of the EU member states in view of their political, social, and economic development.

“It is no coincidence that Germany emerged in international opinion polls as the most popular country in the world in 2014,” says Roland Schatz, founder and CEO of Media Tenor International. “The reports of international TV news have highlighted Germany’s economic strength and peace-commitment time and again.”

In many fields, TV news painted a sympathetic picture of the Federal Republic and even reports about Germany’s traumatic history were only moderately critical. The bottom line was that Germany achieved the optimal combination of positive evaluation and a strong presence on the international media stage.

For the media image of the second-place Republic of Ireland, the economic recovery stood in the foreground. Ireland was also viewed favorably on the fields of education and culture. The Netherlands, in third place, scored well when it came to science and culture.

For this award, Media Tenor looked at a total of 457,783 reports from 23 international TV programs. Trained human coders have analyzed the media content for a period from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. The inter-coder reliability was 88% in the 2nd quarter of 2014.

For over 20 years Media Tenor's mission has been to contribute to objective, diverse and newsworthy news by bringing together the diverse parties who both impact and are affected by the news. Media Tenor's global research projects include analyses of election campaigns, investor relations, public diplomacy, corporate communications and other topics critical to news makers and news audiences. The annual Agenda Setting Conference brings together these diverse constituencies for data-driven workshops, panels, case studies and keynote speeches.
