Le Monde Wins Agenda Setter Award

Threads from the French daily newspaper are much discussed in international media, especially coverage of the debt crisis and party politics

Vienna, February 20, 2015. The French daily Le Monde is honored by international research Institute Media Tenor for particular strength in the setting of topics with this year's Agenda Setter Award. The occasion is the 15th Agenda Setting Conference, which takes place from February 19 to 21 in Vienna. Behind Le Monde, The Wall Street Journal ranked in second place, the U.K.'s Guardian achieved third place.

The Agenda Setter Award aims to recognize the extent to which news and interviews will be picked up by other media and are used as sources. This ranking is an indicator of the performance of investigative journalism and quality of the editorial team.

"Le Monde has proven for many foreign editors an important source of information for the French debt crisis," says Roland Schatz, Editor in Chief of Media Tenor International on the results of the Agenda Setter Media Award. "Even with regard to the scandals around President Hollande and the political upheavals that followed them, Le Monde was an indispensable resource for many journalists."

The Media Tenor Agenda Setter Award acknowledges those media that have been recognised by other media for providing content that offered transparent and accurate information to its audiences. This is to say that the award analyzed news media quoting other news sources when reporting. The quoted news media are considered agenda setters.

Media Tenor analyzed opinion leadership for over 20 years. Its quotation ranking shows how news, editorial content, and interviews are used as sources by other media. This ranking also reflects editorial values, including truth and accuracy, impartiality, accountability, public interest, and independence.

For this analysis, a total of 2,637 citations in 25 international print and television media were evaluated by trained coders. The timeframe of the analysis ranged from 07.01.2013 to 30.6.2014. The average inter-coder reliability was 88% in the 2nd quarter of 2014.
