UNICEF Wins NGO Reputation Award
UN Children's Fund achieved a positive and diverse media image
Vienna, February 20, 2015. The United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF wins the NGO Reputation Award from the research institute Media Tenor International. Amnesty International was the first runner-up. The award is presented at the 15th Agenda Setting Conference, held in Vienna from February 19 to 21. The World Economic Forum and the World Trade Organization tied as second runners-up.
Media Tenor International presents this award to those NGOs and transnational organizations that have achieved over the period of one year the best media image. The award is not just about the amount of coverage, but also about variety of topics, international reach and continuity of coverage over time. For the NGO Reputation Award, Media Tenor International analyzed the content of international TV news from nine countries.
"UNICEF achieved especially positive coverage, when it came to its own operations and the connection to the stakeholders," said Dr. Christian Kolmer of Media Tenor International. "In a media environment, where scandal and negativism determine the image of NGOs more and more, organizations can only thrive if they are consistently in the media with their own messages speaking with their own voice."
Amnesty International followed in second place. The human rights organization performed particularly well with regard to worldwide visibility. Activities in 28 countries were picked up by the television news.
For this analysis, a total of 101,713 reports on institutions in 18 international TV shows and three business publications has been evaluated by trained coders. Evaluation period was July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. The average inter-coder reliability was 88% in the 2nd quarter of 2014.
