Morocco Wins MENA Country Image Award

Coverage positive across political, economic, and social issues

Vienna. February 20, 2015. In the aftermath of the Arab Spring in 2010, the perception towards MENA countries has often been clouded by political instability and conflict. With media coverage usually focused on extremism or violence it reflects poorly on the stability of the region as a whole. The rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is now a primary focus across media outlets as the organization is beginning to extend its reach beyond that of Iraq and Syria.

The award is calculated based on a scientific media content analysis of 5,041 reports on the MENA region out of 457,738 reports on global TV news and opinion-leading business and financial print media. A catalogue of 8 criteria was applied to the reports to gauge a country’s performance. Criteria included basic visibility and no excess negativity, political performance, economic performance, social developments and leadership qualities.

“Morocco takes the number one spot as the country has managed to ensure it maintains a stable government in the wake of the challenges facing the region. The country also attracted good positive coverage on its approaches to protecting the environment and the promotion of its cultural heritage, thus making it an all-round achiever. In second and third place the country is followed by Israel and the United Arab Emirates both of whom managed to attracted positive coverage with regards to culture and tourism,” says Theresa Lötter, Managing Director of Media Tenor South Africa.
