Political dissatisfaction clear, but path forward remains murky

Political coverage on U.K. TV news, April 1, 2014 – March 31, 2015

New York, April 3, 2015. – With the U.K. parliamentary elections approaching, TV news media in the U.K. are highlighting dissatisfaction amongst voters that have limited positivity to offer any of the major parties, according to new research from Media Tenor International.

“Extreme right party UKIP had the most favourable media image in March, not because of its policy positions but because of its ongoing popularity,” says Racheline Maltese, a researcher at Media Tenor. “Enthusiasm for Labour, the Lib Dems, and the coalition is low,” she adds.  “The people want a change, but there’s no clarity in the media on what they want a change to.”

The televised debates look to have a significant impact on voter sentiment after poor performance in the March 26th interviews left Cameron with a negative image and lowered expectations for the April 2 multi-party debates. “The media is spotlighting on the likability of party leaders, but issues are not necessarily in focus,” Maltese notes.

Media Tenor found a range of issues driving political media coverage in the U.K., including the health and education systems, the benefits program, and overall economic conditions and policies, suggesting media audiences are looking for statements from party leaders that directly address their quality of life needs.

This research examined all 49,359 reports on U.K. TV news from April 1, 2014 – March 31, 2015.
